Die am Asien-Afrika-Institut tätigen Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler erforschen den geografischen Raum von Westafrika bis Indonesien in Geschichte und Gegenwart - Sprachen und Kulturen, Gesellschaft und Wirtschaft.
Neben Einzelprojekten sind am Asien-Afrika-Institut 1 ERC-Grant, ein Akademie-Langzeitvorhaben, eine Kollegforschungsgruppe und ein Sonderforschungsbereich angesiedelt.
