Confucianism for the 21st Century?

September 21-23, 2009

International conference on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Sinology in Hamburg

Confucianism, a central issue in Sinology ever since, has undergone a remarkable revival in the past years. While state-sponsored Confucius Institutes are promoting Chinese culture all over the world, Chinese intellectuals are discussing Confucianism as a serious alternative to Western social doctrines. Sinologists are confronted with a familiar subject in a new way; they will have to analyze its developments carefully while subjecting some long-cherished opinions to critical examination. The conference will take the occasion of the 100th anniversary of Sinology in Hamburg to review the multi-faceted topic of Confucianism from different angles. International experts as well as young scholars will discuss the history, present situation and future perspectives of Confucianism. They will attempt a survey and perhaps a reorientation of Confucianism studies. What do we know, what don’t we know, and what will be our future questions?
