Gabriele Vogt teaches classes on issues of Japanese politics and society. In advanced-level courses students are required to apply social science theories to the "case study" of Japan. Adding a comparative perspective including historical Japan or contemporary Europe etc. sometimes proves to be helpful in understanding contemporary Japan.

Gabriele Vogt specializes on social science research on Japan. She is in particular interested in research themes related to political science and sociology. At the core of her research activities are concepts of multilevel governance and social movement research. She places Japan as a case study in comparative perspective to the US, to European nations, and to Japan's neighboring nations in East-Asia. Her current research project reviews Japan's ongoing migration policy reforms, and is entitled Japan's Labor Market and International Migration. Within this framework she specializes on question of international health caregiver migration.

Die Renaissance der Friedensbewegung in Okinawa. Innen- und außenpolitische Dimensionen 1995-2000. München: iudicium Verlag. 358 p.
Okinawa rückte im Spätsommer des Jahres 1995 in den Fokus der Medien, als eine 12-jährige Schülerin von drei in Okinawa stationierten US-amerikanischen Soldaten vergewaltigt wurde. Dieses Verbrechen gilt als einer der Auslöser einer inselweiten, trotz aller realpolitischen Forderungen stark von einer eigenen kulturellen Identität geprägten Protestbewegung. Die vorliegende Fallstudie analysiert den Charakter dieser sozialen Bewegung zwischen 1995 und 2000 und beleuchtet deren innen- wie außenpolitische Bedeutung im Rahmen zweier Interdependenzstrukturen, der nationalen Interdependenz zwischen Naha und Tôkyô, sowie der internationalen zwischen Naha, Tôkyô und Washington.
Die Renaissance der Friedensbewegung Okinawas fungierte im japanischen Staat als eine themenspezifische politische Opposition aus der Region. In ihren konkreten politischen Zielen, dem Abzug des US-Militärs aus der Präfektur Okinawa, scheiterte sie zwar, doch trug sie dazu bei, die japanische Öffentlichkeit für das Missverhältnis in der nationalen Aufteilung der Verteidigungslasten zu sensibilisieren. Sie stärkte ferner den politischen Diskurs bezüglich einzelner Themen, wie etwa der Multilateralisierungsdebatte und der Diskussion um eine Dezentralisierung des japanischen Staates. Auch initiierte sie – vor allem auf lokaler Ebene – eine neue Selbstperzeption politischer Akteure, die bereits, ebenso wie der quantitativ zunehmende Einsatz des Instruments der Direkten Demokratie, als signifikanter erster Schritt zu einer graduellen realpolitischen Dezentralisierung Japans verstanden werden kann.

International Labor Migration to Japan: Current Models and Future Outlook. Hamburg: German Association for Asian Studies (ASIEN The German Journal on Contemporary Asia, no. 124, July 2012, special issue). pp. 8-197.
The eight research papers of this volume (plus a chapter-length introduction) explore the manifold political, sociological and economic issues surrounding international labor migration to Japan. Special attention is given to the debate on “wanted” and “unwanted” migration and integration, which has been led by politicians, bureaucrats, scholars, and representatives of the business world and civil-society organizations. The implications of this debate on migrants’ life course decisions and professional success resp. failure is highlighted in case studies drawn from research on the recent health-care giver migration to Japan, and from research on Japan’s largest ethnic minority, the Chinese. The volume closes by introducing a comparative perspective to the Japanese case, including Germany as a point of reference.

Many nations today face the challenge of integrating immigrant populations into the national body. On one level, the work of integration requires a great deal of creative policy-making and policy adjustment, while at another level it requires citizens to re-think who belongs. In an age of declining population in the developed world, societal fears of foreign infiltration compete with economic demands for open markets and open borders. While politicians and policymakers grapple with these global realities at the meta level, citizens’ groups often act at the community level providing needed on-the-ground support. Meanwhile, immigrants themselves conceive of strategies to manage their livelihoods, often in transnational spaces.
This book introduces the frameworks and challenges of migration policy in Japan, Germany, France and Canada. It shares insights into ongoing processes of renegotiating the current structures on multiple levels of the policy-making process.
