MA "Documentation and Analysis of African Languages" / Joint European Masters in Documentation and Analysis of African Languages"
The Master Documentation and Analysis of African Languages is a two-years course which starts in October. It is fully modularized and based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The languages of instruction are both English and German (depending on demand).
The M.A. program is research-oriented and focuses on theories and methods of language documentation. It offers advanced courses in all areas of formal grammar and linguistic field methods. Topics include elicitation, transcription, organization and analysis of linguistic data from un(der)described African languages.
Based on the "International Cooperation Agreement on Inter-University Cooperation Program" (I.D.A.A.L:C./Master Level) and on the "International Cooperation Agreement" J.E.D.A.A.L.C.) M.A. students will study the period of one semester at one of our European Partner Universities. (see Kooperationen)

Voraussetzungen
Erster berufsqualifizierender Hochschulabschluss (B.A.) in einem afrikanistischen Fach oder einem vergleichbaren Fach, in dem
- a. 45 Leistungspunkte (credits) mit afrikalinguistischen Inhalten erworben wurden, davon obligatorisch
- Kenntnisse mindestens einer afrikanischen Sprache (Einführungs- und Aufbaumodul) und
- Grundkenntnisse der Phonetik/Phonologie, Morphologie und Syntax afrikanischer Sprachen. b. Weitere 45 LP (credits) müssen mit sprachwissenschaftlichen Inhalten erworben worden sein.
Admission requirements
B.A. degree in African linguistics or another comparable subject which includes
- a. 45 credit points of African linguistics, including
- practical skills in one African language at least (introductory plus more advances module) and
- basic knowledge of phonetics/phonology, morphology and syntax of African languages. b. Additional 45 credit points must have been acquired with linguistic contents.
- 1.1 language course (<Amharic>, <Hausa>, <Swahili>)
module "Methods of language documentation":- linguistic fieldwork
- structure & literature of an additional African language
- 1.2 language course (<Amharic>, <Hausa>, <Swahili>)
module "Documentation of language change":- methods of genetic language classification
- grammaticalisation
- 2.1 semester abroad at a European partner university
alternatively the following modules at Hamburg University module "Communication: knowledge and languages"- organization and production of knowledge
- conditions and consequences of language change
- 2.2 final module (colloquium, preparation of master thesis)
