Online Workshop, Armenian Society under Caliphal Rule
7. Dezember 2023, von AAI Webmaster
On 7–8 December 2023, the SCORE team hosted an online workshop on the social history of Armenia from the first Muslim invasions to the establishment of the Bagratuni kingdom (7–9 centuries CE/1–3 centuries AH). The event was convened by SCORE team member Alasdair Grant and featured contributions by team leader Dr Hannah-Lena Hagemann and research associate Alon Dar. Papers were given by Tim Greenwood (St Andrews), Johannes Preiser-Kapeller (Vienna), Leone Pecorini Goodall (Edinburgh/St Andrews), Stephanie Forrest (Cambridge), Nik Matheou (Edinburgh) and Ani Honarchian (Saint Louis); Emilio Bonfiglio (Hamburg), John Haldon (Princeton), Noëmie Lucas (Edinburgh), Walter Beers (Hamilton), Lewis Read (Vienna) and Antonia Bosanquet (Utrecht) acted as discussants. Topics ranged from church councils to epigraphy, the environment and inter-cultural marriage, while the online format ensured a highly international audience. The papers are expected to be published as a journal themed issue in due course. A follow-up workshop is planned for December 2025, with a particular emphasis on material culture; some papers are already scheduled, and proposals are welcome at any time.
