On 25 and 26 June 2025, SCORE team member Alasdair co-convened a workshop entitled ‘Quantification in the Humanities: A Guided Introduction to Bridging a Disciplinary Gap’. The workshop was funded within the framework of Alasdair’s Young Academy Fellowship at the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg. The event was led in collaboration with Myles Lavan, Professor in Ancient History at the University of St Andrews, a leading expert on quantification and uncertainty in Roman history. The event began with a lecture on Myles’s current book project, a comparative demographic study of manumission between the Roman world and the Americas. The following day, a compact group of scholars from Medieval and Islamic Studies met for a hybrid discussion of pre-circulated readings and participant-led discussion of current research projects and challenges. Anyone interested in receiving the workshop reading list can contact Alasdair any time at alasdair.grant"AT"uni-hamburg.de.
