In May 2024, SCORE team member Alasdair’s monograph, Greek Captives and Mediterranean Slavery, 1260–1460, was published by Edinburgh University Press. The book studies the capture and enslavement of thousands of ordinary Greek Christians between the Aegean region and the wider Mediterranean in the context of Turkish and western European territorial and economic expansion at Byzantium’s expense. The book is available in Open Access and can be downloaded free of charge via JSTOR, De Gruyter Brill or Edinburgh University Press. The book has been shortlisted for the 2025 Dionisius A. Agius Prize of the Society for the Medieval Mediterranean, awarded ‘for a distinguished first book in the field of Medieval Mediterranean Studies’. In June 2025, Alasdair recorded a podcast episode on the book as part of the series Byzantium & Friends, hosted by Anthony Kaldellis of the University of Chicago.
