LORILS Roundtable, Groningen
9. Februar 2024, von AAI Webmaster
On 9 February 2024, the SCORE team travelled to Groningen in the Netherlands for a one-day roundtable event on the theme of oaths. The meeting formed the first in-person event of the collaborative project ‘Loyalty Oaths in the Roman, Byzantine and Early Islamicate Legal Spheres’ (LORILS), funded jointly by the universities of Hamburg and Groningen and convened by Daphne Penna (Legal History, Groningen) and Alasdair Grant (SCORE Team, Hamburg). The roundtable comprised four panels, each including a talk and a dedicated response. The themes were ‘The Oath as Contract’, ‘Oaths of Officeholders’, ‘Oaths in Diplomacy’ and ‘Oaths in Political Culture’. The SCORE team’s collaborators were Daphne Penna, Frits Brandsma and Tom van Bochove (Groningen), Marios Tantalos (Athens), Antonia Bosanquet (Utrecht) and Damián Fernández (Northern Illinois). The day was punctuated by lunch at the house of the late Herman Jan Scheltema, erstwhile professor of Roman Law at Groningen. The next LORILS in-person event will be a public conference in Hamburg on 21–22 October 2024, for which the call for papers will be published imminently.
