Preliminary List of the NGMPP Manuscripts
In order to provide easy access to the microfilmed material, a "Preliminary Title List" has been compiled. For this purpose a second branch of the NGMPP was established at the University of Hamburg in 1987. The information on texts in Sanskrit, Nepali, Newari and other South Asian Languages were entered into one database. A separate database was created for the Tibetan material.
The "Preliminary List of Manuscripts, Blockprints and Historical Documents Microfilmed by the NGMPP, Part 1 (excluding Tibetan Material and Historical Documents)" was published in June 2003 and can be ordered now.
The "Preliminary List of Manuscripts, Blockprints and Historical Documents Microfilmed by the NGMPP, Part 2: Tibetan Material (Release 1)" was published in September 2003 and can be ordered now.
The list was compiled on the basis of the so-called "index cards" made for each manuscript at the time of microfilming, not on the basis of the microfilms themselves. This implies that the list includes only the information found on these cards and that these data were not checked as to their correctness in the process of the compilation of the list.
The filling out of the index cards on the spot did not allow for a detailed description of the manuscripts. Such work can be done only when one has access to a well-stocked Indological and Tibetological library, an impossibility when one is working under "field conditions." In view of the limited time and money allotted to the project as a whole, the NGMPP gave priority to the securing of the material.
The Nepalese-German Manuscript Cataloguing Project (NGMCP), is now preparing a descriptive catalogue of the manuscripts microfilmed by the NGMPP.
