Can rebels be persuaded to return to the fold without the use of violent means? What arguments do rulers employ in order to tempt rebels to put down their arms? These and related questions were the subject of a paper given by Hannah-Lena Hagemann at a workshop organised by Petra Sijpesteijn and the Historisches Kolleg München. Hannah’s talk explored some of the rhetorical strategies utilised for “Reconciling Rebels in the Early Islamic Period”.
