On April 13th 2018, Prof. Dr. Burglind Jungmann from the University of California, Los Angeles, held a lecture on "Cultural Translations: The Confrontation of Chosŏn Painters with European Concepts of Illusionism".
From her abstract: Although regular direct contacts between Korea and Europe only started in the 19th century, Korean scholars and artists absorbed knowledge and technological skills from Europe from the 17th century onward. European inspiration can be detected in decorative court art, portraiture, and landscape painting. Far from just imitating foreign manners, these painting exemplify how ideas and painting devices were visually and culturally ‘translated.’
