Grant Awarded by the German-Israeli Foundation (GIF)

The German-Israeli Foundation (GIF) has awarded 279.460 € to Aaron Butts and Boaz Zissu (of Bar Ilan University) for the project “Understanding the ‘Kingdom of the Gideonites’: The Shaping of the Memory of Ethiopia’s Jewish Kingdom and its Impact on Ethiopian Jewish Identity Discourse, Past and Present”. This project will be carried out jointly by researchers in Israel and by Sophia Dege-Müller at the University of Hamburg. The project will further strengthen the emerging focus on the Beta Israel (Ethiopian Jews) that Sophia has been pursuing (see here and here). The project will be housed in the Hiob Ludolf Centre for Ethiopian and Eritrean Studies.
