M.A. Sinology: Conceptual and Intellectual History
Expanding its successful M.A. programme in Sinology, the Department of Chinese Language and Culture at the University of Hamburg now offers a specialised M.A. in Chinese conceptual and intellectual history, the first of its kind. Drawing on international scholarship and following a growing interest in conceptual and intellectual history among Chinese scholars, the four-semester M.A. programme combines sophisticated theoretical approaches with close readings of Chinese sources.

The curriculum includes:
- classes on Chinese culture, politics and society as well as Chinese conceptual and intellectual history
- specialised seminars on the theory of conceptual and intellectual history
- summer schools on conceptual and intellectual history
- one semester at a European or Chinese partner institution (Shanghai, Nanjing, Taipeh, etc.)
- intensive training in modern and classical Chinese (optional)
Courses are taught in German and English by internationally renowned scholars. Classes are small, offering an excellent student-to-faculty ratio.

Requirements and application:
Online application is open from 1st June to 15th July for the winter semester (starting in October) and from 1st December to 15th January for the summer semester (starting in April).
Applicants should:
- hold a B.A. degree in Sinology, Chinese studies or similar majors
- have a sound basis in modern and classical Chinese
- be proficient in English
