Why study Languages and Cultures of Southeast Asia?
The 21st century is the Asian century. The influence of this region is growing, both politically, economically, and culturally. The southeastern part of the Asian continent is at the forefront of these developments.
From the perspective of geopolitics, the environment, religion, ecology, logistics, sustainability, anthropology, and futurology, Southeast Asia will grow in interest and importance.
What do we offer in the undergraduate programme?
Our B.A. course combines intensive language training, introductory courses on the historical, political, and cultural background of the states in the region, and courses on specific contemporary topics. This is complimentedy by a large selection of electives for specific interests of the students.
Students furthermore have the opportunity to take a semester abroad at one of our partner universities in Southeast Asia where they can enhance their intercultural competencies and language skills. There is also the option to do internships in Germany or in Southeast Asia.
What are you going to learn in the undergraduate programme?
In-depth knowledge of one Southeast Asian language and extensive knowledge of another. This knowledge can be used in the M.A. Program in Hamburg or abroad.
Comprehensive and thorough knowledge of the geopolitical situation, traditional and modern societies, and forms of cultural expressions in Southeast Asia.
Advanced level skills to present your ideas in a structured and logical way.
What do we offer in the graduate programme?
Interesting and diverse courses on specific historical and current topics and disciplines relevant to the region.
Semester abroad at a partner university in Southeast Asia, where you will further develop your specialist knowledge and language skills and collect material for your master's thesis.
A wide range of electives to support the main theme of your degree.
What are you going to learn in the graduate programme?
You develop and study topics in a critical and constructive way - building on a theoretical framework.
Ability to conduct fundamental research independently.
Ability to present your results in oral presentations and in written reports and papers.
What do we offer outside of the curriculum?
Cultural events, presentations, lectures, film evenings, discussions, parties, excursions, tandem programs, a family atmosphere and good food!
Ph.D. programme
We offer selected candidates the opportunity to develop topics of their choice in fundamental research. The candidates must apply to a professor for this. If the professor accepts the topic and the question, the application must go to the faculty in the following phase. If this is successful, the candidate has 3-4 years to write the thesis under the supervision of two professors. After a positive evaluation by the two supervisors, the candidate will defend the thesis in an in viva at the university.
