We kindly invite you to this online lecture organised by the Hamburg Society for Thai Studies and the Department for Languages and Cultures of Southeast Asia on Friday, January 14, 2022, 14 - 16h CET.
The lecture examines the impact of transnational labor migration and factors associated with the mental health of left-behind children and their primary caretakers in Thailand. It also explores the situation of the relationship between the care drain and care chain. Findings indicate that the children of migrant parents are more likely to demonstrate behavioral problems and hyperactivity than those in non-migrant households. The research results raise concerns around the impact of mental health on children living separately from their parents and point to the need for parents to continue to express their affection for the children that they have left behind.
This online lecture will be held by Dr. Benjamas Penboon who is based at the Institute for Population and Social Research, Mahidol University, Thailand. Her research fields are migration and labor mobility in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Thailand. Her dissertation was awarded the best dissertation in the field of Social Science in 2021 by the National Research Council of Thailand (NRCT). She published in the Journal of Cross-Cultural Gerontology and the Kasetsart Journal of Social Sciences.
