Diese beiden neuen Kurse im Vertiefungsmodul der Thaiistik können im Sommersemester erstmals auch von B.A.-Studierenden im Wahlbereich belegt werden.

Thai politics and society since 1973

In October 1973, a military regime was toppled by mass demonstrations of students supported by large segements of the population. Since then Thai society embarked on a difficult transition to democracy. However, since then frequent military coups caused setbacks severy times. The course will discuss the political and social changes as well as the role of the military, the business elites and the monarchy. Much emphasis is given to the political discourses in Thailand.

The students shall get a deeper understanding of the complexities of Thai politics since the start of the democratisaion process of the early 1970s.

160 years of Thai-German relations: Reading the sources

2022 marks the 160th anniversary of the Eulenburg Treaty (1862) when Prussia and the Norddeutscher Bund established diplomatic and trade relations with Siam as Thailand was still internationally known. Based on primary sources (archiveal and published) this course aims at studying the historical development of Thai-German relatiions in the fields of politics, diplomacy, culture, economy, science and education, and other fields. Moreover, the establishment of Thai language training in Germany will also be discussed.

The students shall get a deeper understanding of Thai-German relations both with regard to historical and cultural dimensions.

Beide dieser Veranstaltungen sind verpflichten für M.A.-Studierende mit einer Spezialisierung auf Thaiistik. Das Kursangebot richtet sich jedoch auch an interessierte PhD- und B.A.-Studierende, die diesen Kurs im fachspezifischen Wahlbereich belegen möchten.
