This presentation explores the cultural weight that languages hold over their speakers and how this can be manipulated by politics. It traces the history of Bahasa Melayu, its many different lineages that exist across the Southeast Asian region today, and the role of ASEAN. Maria Sher pursues a master's degree in Languages and Cultures of Southeast Asia at the University of Hamburg. She originally comes from Pakistan but has spent eight years in Malaysia and Cambodia where she developed a strong connection to the region.
