On Thursdays, 16 - 18h, in ESA O, room 221

This semester's movie cycle features a selection of eight movies from five Southeast Asian countries. The movies will be shown in their original languages and with German or English subtitles. The programme, which consists of both contemporary entertaining and documentary-style movies, revolves around the questions: What does living in Southeast Asian countries mean in the 21st century? What are the societal questions and challenges faced by the communities in those countries? How do they face rapid social changes and political upheavals?

This seminar (number 57-316 in STiNE) will try to answer those questions by briefly introducing each movie and giving room for discussion after watching it. Through the selection, students will also be introduced to a part of the visual production of those countries, and invited to reflect on the artistic answer given by cinematographers to contemporary societal challenges.

20.10.22: "Mukhsin" by Yasmin Ahmad

Synopsis

This 2006 movie from Malaysia examines the most common and uncomfortable human experience. Orked is 10 and her best friend Mukhsin is 12. The movie explores what happens when your best friend--someone with whom you've been learning to do cool things like climbing trees, flying kites and riding bicycles--starts to develop romantic feelings for you.

Synopsis

This 2022 Indonesian family comedy-drama tells the story of a Batak family and their ways of life, family traditions, and customs. In an attempt to have their three sons return home from abroad, an elderly couple decides to stage marital disharmony and a divorce.

17.11.22: "มหา'ลัย เหมืองแร่" (The Tin Mine) by Jira Maligool

Synopsis

The Tin Mine is a 2005 Thai biographical drama film directed by Jira Maligool. It is adapted from short stories by Ajin Panjapan and his semi-autobiographical account of growing up in a mining camp in Kapong District of Phang Nga Province from 1949 to 1953. The Tin Mine was the official entry from Thailand for Best Foreign Language Film at the 78th Academy Awards.

01.12.22: "ฉลาดเกมส์โกง" (Bad Genius) by Nattawut Poonpiriya

Synopsis

Bad Genius is a Thai heist thriller from 2017. Inspired by real-life news of students cheating on the SAT, the film transplants the heist structure to a school-exams setting, and features themes of class inequality as well as teenage social issues.

15.12.22: "Smaller and Smaller Circles" by Raya Martin

Synopsis

In this 2007 Philippine mystery drama, two Jesuit priests, Gus Saenz and Jerome Lucero, perform forensic work to solve the mystery revolving around the murders of young boys in Payatas, one of Metro Manila's biggest slum areas. While dealing with the systematic corruption of the government, church, and the elite, the two priests delve into criminal profiling, crime scene investigation, and forensic analysis to solve the killings, and eventually, find the murderer.

12.01.23: "Lola" by Brillante Mendoza

This Vietnamese movie from 2021 tells the story of the shocking suicide of a young pop star, after which her backup singer finds herself living a parallel life. But is her success earned, or is it being aided by occult forces?

02.02.23: "Gái Già Lắm Chiêu" (Camellia Sisters) by Namcito and Bảo Nhân

Synopsis

In this Vietnamese movie from 2021, three sisters reunite in the wealthy palace they grew up in, as the secrets in their family begin to unravel. The film finds the sisters trapped in the golden cage of their wealth while pulled in different directions by their conflicting desires but eventually brought back together after a series of unexpected revelations exposing the long-buried truths of the remaining Lý family.
