About Respeto:
Charged with poetry and music and considered one of the first films to truly tackle the era of extrajudicial killings under Duterte, Respeto tells the story of Hendrix (Abra), an aspiring young rapper from the slums who strikes an unlikely friendship with Doc (Dido de La Paz), a poet who has long abandoned his art. As mentor and mentee come closer through their shared tragedies, they must face intolerable realities and circumstances that threaten to consume them.
Critic Reviews:
"Infusing poetry, rap, and traumatic historical experiences into a popular genre, Respeto and its creator Monteras are a force to be reckoned with."
I-lin Liu (Asian Movie Pulse)
"… a captivating look at the bonds that bring people together, and the dangerous politics that rip communities apart."
Courtney Small (In the Seats)
"Laced with social commentary and scintillating musical scenes, Respeto offers much more than its verses combined …. the cast – especially Abra and De La Paz – deliver performances radiating fury and confusion as they confront an intolerable reality getting grimmer every day."
Clarence Tsui (The Hollywood Reporter)
"… a film whose mood and designs are bravely current, most likely inspired by the culture of inhumanity that is being perpetuated by the [former] leadership's landmark policies. It regrets how, in such a world of strife, words are used to incite petty divisions and shallow insults instead of creating proper discourse."
Oggs Cruz (Rappler)
"… one of the best Filipino films made … leaves you heavy-hearted, speechless and at the same time enlightened …"
Hannah Arcenal (Thomasian Film Society)
