Über den Vortrag:

The process of intellectual exchange with and learning from the Europeans is a recurring theme in Thai history, especially evident in the reign of King Mongkut and King Chulalongkorn. The modernization of Siam according to European models, including educational reform, was carried out intensively after King Chulalongkorn’s first visit to Europe of in 1897. Striking examples are the learning European languages in the reign of King Chulalongkorn, the reception of political ideology in Siam since 1932, and the reception of "Literature for Life" after the student revolution of 14 October 1974. In Europe we might mention the debates between humanities or liberal arts and science, between "Literaturwissenschaft" and "Naturwissenschaft," in the movement of positivism in the early modern age in Europe.

The cooperation between persons, nations or cultures confronts the natural diversity of external as well as internal factors. Each participant brings to the meeting a particular cultural, social and political background, a set of previous experiences, and prejudices, or "Faktizität" in the terminology of Heidegger.

Professor Dr. Kittikhun Pornsan Watanagura (ศาสตราจารย์ ดร. พรสรรค์ วัฒนางกูร) is Professor Em. of German Language and Literature at the Department of Western Languages, Faculty of Arts, Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok. She has a Dr. phil. Ruprecht-Karls Universität Heidelberg, and now Fellow of The Royal Society of Thailand (Academy of Arts, Comparative Literature). She is member of the editorial board of the Journal MANUSYA and the International Journal of the Royal Society Thailand, also chair of the committees to celebrate anniverseries of diplomatic relations between Thailand and The Netherlands, Germany and Portugal. Her publications in Thai, German and English on linguistics, comparative literature and intercultural studies consist of over 180 articles. She has been awarded many honours and awards, such as the decoration “Maha Paramaphn Chang Pueak (The Royal White Elefant Highest Rank)” and the Bundesverdienstkreuz am Band from Bundespresident Joachim Gauck. She is also President of the Thai-German Society, Bangkok.
