To Say without Saying - “Literary Politics” in the Work of Wang Yucheng 王禹偁
Stéphane Feuillas, Professor of Chinese studies, Université Paris-Diderot, CRCAO
Wang Yucheng (954-1001) was a leading scholar of the Northern Song Dynasty. He stands out in the history of Chinese literature and thought as one of the defenders of the guwen 古文movement. His “literary” practice raises questions about his attitude towards freedom of speech and his art of writing under heavy political pressure. Even when he had no position at court, most of his texts show an artful and cunning way to name “without saying” principles that should guide an enlightened ruler and to express his ideal of rejuvenating the scholarly way.
Between Politics and Literature - The Jinshi Examination Supervised by Ouyang Xiu 歐陽修in 1057
Rong Hengying, Ph.D. Candidate Centre d'études sur la Chine moderne et contemporaine (EHESS), Assistant temporaire d'Enseignement et de Recherche (Collège de France; Chaire de l'histoire intellectuelle de la Chine)
The legendary jinshi examination of 1057 reveals a deep connection between literature and politics in imperial China. On the basis of a detailed analysis of examination papers, we will consider the reasons and impact of the selection made by Ouyang Xiu. It will be shown that Ouyang Xiu made his selection in the context of his epic fight against the literary style of valuing the strange, the extraordinary, and the exceptional, which was profoundly rooted in political concern. The insights gained from the scrutiny of the 1057 examination session are relevant for the issue of Confucianism in action.
