About this lecture:
What does tourism do to territories? In Sabah, North of Borneo (Malaysia), tourism has boomed after 2000. Even though most tourists stay near the sea and the main city, Kota Kinabalu, they are attracted by nature and wildlife. It's one of the main reasons why they visit Borneo. The Kinabatangan River is one of Sabah's wildlife destinations. It has been transformed by tourism and wildlife conservation. In this talk, I examine the narrative and the staging of the encounter between humans and animals through the analysis of human interactions with the so-called "wilderness" and the examination of competition for the organization within this territory.
