During the reign of King Chulalongkorn (1868–1910), various reform projects were carried out with the help of European experts in the Siamese civil service. The civil servants from different nations – Germans, French, Italians, English and others – worked in the newly formed ministries. In their free time, they therefore committed themselves to researching everything they needed to know, from wildlife, culture, language and literature to the history of the country.
In February 1904 they – among them German scholar Oskar Frankfurter – founded the Siam Society in the Oriental Hotel and placed it under the king's patronage. With the aim of "exploring and promoting art, science and literature relating to Siam and the neighboring countries", members should regularly give scientific lectures for subsequent publication in the Journal of the Siam Society. Due to its various activities, the Siam Society might be considered as a place of knowledge transfer between the European and Thai members. This lecture examines how deep this transfer went and what benefits both sides derived from it.
