Though considerably destroyed during the second World War, Hamburg remains one of the Germany's largest tourist centers. Not only is it still rich in historic monuments, the hanseatic city has always been a cultural metropolis as well. From young to old, everyone can find in Hamburg something to enjoy.
If you enjoy walking, you will love the downtown with the Rathausmarkt, Alster, Speicherstadt and the city's many churches.
Should you like to spend more time on water you will enjoy Elbe and Alster boat tours offered in the city.
Hamburg offers a lot to all sorts of museum-goers. Have a look at List of Museums or try out the search engine of www.museen.de to find a museum or a gallery for you to visit.
All theater-goers can look up the current program and addresses of Hamburg theaters at Hamburg theater site.
If you are a music fan, the choice you have in Hamburg is incredibly wide. If you like musicals - Hamburg is THE city in Germany for you. To get uptodate information of which musicals are now on visit the Theater site (above) or directly the Musicals website.
The younger generation can enjoy Hamburg lively night life or visit one of the many star rock concerts in the city.
The classic fans should not miss the wonderful concerts in the Hamburg Musikhalle or the operas at Hamburg State Opera House.
Don't forget to include the Fairs Hamburg is so famous for in your visit plans.
If you would like to look up the programs or book tickets in advance visit the Ticket Web or Ticket Exchange.
You might also want to look up the following sites: Hamburg official site, Hamburg Tourist Office
Hamburg offers a lot of accommodation possibilites in different price ranges. To help the conference guests the ICES organizing committee has prepared a list of hotels we have arranged for special discounts with. Please take a look at the hotel overview.
For those who prefer to look for accommodation on his or her own, we can advise to look up the list of hotels of Hamburg Tourist Board (under "Accommodation"). From their site it is possible to book most of the hotels on-line.
Another helpful link is Varta hotel guide - an extremely transparent and well-designed on-line directory. At the pages of www.check-inn.com one can not only search for hotels but also find a quite full listing of furnished apartments and bed-and-breakfast offers.
For those of our guests who prefer family atmosphere and low prices and do not mind longer travel times within Hamburg it might be advisable to contact the Bed-and-Breakfast service. Finally, you may want to consult the German yellow pages (having chosen Hotels as the branch and Hamburg as the city you will get a complete list of hotels registered in the telephone directory) and the Yellow map web site (a sort of combination of yellow pages and an interactive city map).
The conference organizing committee will try to arrange for a bus and/or cars to pick up guests at Hamburg airport on July 12th and 13th 2003.
Should you be arriving at the central railway station or at a different time - and not willing to take a taxi - please check this page, we will show here how to get to most hotels by bus or train or car.
These links can help you arrange your trip comfortably: German airports (collection of links to all the German airports, with timetable and partially booking options); Lufthansa web site (schedules and booking - not only for Lufthansa flights); German railway (with the possibility to find out the best connection, the timetable and to buy tickets on-line).
The city of Hamburg disposes of a vast traffic net, including S-Bahn, U-Bahn, A-Bahn (kinds of metro), buses and express buses.
The conference organizing committee has collected some information on cheapest and fastest ways to get around.
First of all we have prepared a set of links to various interactive maps for you to find yourselves better in Hamburg. We can recommend: a map of the city by Stadtplan.net - a good map with complete street index; a very helpful map by Stadtplandienst.de will help you not only to find a street on the map but also to find out the postal zip code if you know the street name and house number; another useful, though a little bit slow, interactive city map, showing not only streets, but also various sites in accordance with your selection (from theaters and museums to fitness centers and pubs) can be found at CityGuide Finder. A lovely combination of an interactive city map and yellow pages is the Yellow map service (also very helpful in hotel search).
All the map providers offer the same service for other German cities, too.
