November: the research unit moves to Rothenbaumchaussee 19

May: the retired Professor Helmut Ziegert announces to have discovered the palace of the Queen of Sheba at Aksum, Ethiopia. The Research Unit issues an official press release to deny any involvement with the affair.

Hat Helmut Ziegert den Palast der Königin von Saba gefunden?

Professor Dr. Helmut Ziegert, pensionierter Hamburger Archäologe der Vor- und Frühgeschichte, hat mit seiner These, er habe in der Nähe des nordäthiopischen Aksum den Palast der Königin von Saba aus dem 10. Jh. v. Chr. entdeckt, für eine breite internationale Diskussion gesorgt. Er leistet damit ohne Zweifel einen interessanten Beitrag zur Geschichte Aksums, belastbare Beweise für seine Theorie legt er jedoch nicht vor.


Ziegert hat seine Hypothese nicht mit äthiopistischen Fachkollegen abgestimmt und ist nicht Mitglied der Forschungsstelle Äthiopistik der Universität Hamburg. Die Mitarbeiter und der Leiter der Forschungsstelle halten die veröffentlichte Position für wissenschaftlich nicht belegt.

Did Helmut Ziegert discover the Queen of Sheba's palace?

Helmut Ziegert, a retired Archaeology professor from the University of Hamburg, has recently inspired a wide international discussion brought about by his announcement that he should have discovered the palace of the Queen of Saba from the 10th century B.C. in the vicinity of Aksum in northern Ethiopia. However, he provides no tenable proof for his otherwise interesting contribution to the history of Aksum.


Ziegert did not discuss his hypothesis with any colleague working in the field of Ethiopian studies or African archaeology. He is not a member of the Research Unit. The members and the head of the Research Unit Ethiopian Studies of Hamburg University consider the published identification as not scientifically proven.
