Contemporary Tigrigna literature: an overview
17 January 2025
On Friday, 17 January 2025, 12:00 pm (CET), at the Asien-Afrika-Institut, room 221, Universität Hamburg (and online), Dr. Haile Gezae Woldegiyorgis (Addis Ababa University) will speak on the topic:
"Contemporary Tigrigna literature: an overview"
The lecture provides an overview of modern literature in Tigrigna, a major African Semitic language spoken in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea. Although the region is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, modern Tigrigna literature, which is evolving in two independent states, remains largely unknown and seldom researched. As a rich source of information, contemporary Tigrigna literature reflects the transformation and profound connections to traditional culture, the precarious existence amidst violent conflicts, and the destinies and aspirations of local communities. This lecture is intended for a broad academic audience.
