ICES 15 Welcome
Open letter of the Hamburg University President
to the participants of the 14th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies, Addis Ababa 2000
Announcement of the 15th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies
November 2, 2000
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
As you know, the International Organizing Committee decided during the 13th International Conference of Ethiopian Studies in Kyoto in 1997 that the 15th Conference should take place in year 2003 in Hamburg, Germany. As the President of the Hamburg University I am happy to take the opportunity today to invite the international academic community working with the focus on the Horn of Africa to Hamburg in three years from now. We all - the University officials and the Ethiopianists working here - will do our best to make the conference a success: the first ICES to take place in the country of Hiob Ludolf and August Dillmann, who were among the founders of the Ethiopian studies as a subject.
The University President will open the Conference in person and use the opportunity to award a young scholar with the first research award of the newly founded Hamburg Foundation for Ethiopian Studies Support.
I hope to see all of you in Hamburg in three years and wish you success in your scholarly activities, including those aimed at preparation for the next Conference.
With kindest regards,
Dr. Dr.h.c. Jürgen Lüthje
President, Hamburg University
