The Textual History of the Ethiopic Synaxarion
1 July 2020
On 1.7.2020 Dorothea Reule presents at the Forschungskolloquium of the AAI on "The Textual History of the Ethiopic Synaxarion".
The Ethiopic Synaxarion is a liturgical work widely attested in manuscripts and used until today by the Ethiopian and Eritrean Orthodox Church. It was translated probably at least twice from two different Arabic Vorlagen in the 14th century, and has been intensively edited in the next centuries by adding content and linguistic editing. Only one of both translations has been edited.
My PhD project was originally intended to be a study of the translation process itself. However, it has become clear through new manuscript evidence that the textual transmission of the Ethiopic Synaxarion is more complicated than suggested by the existing studies and edition, which therefore does not consititute a satisfactory basis for the study of the text's language anymore. Therefore, my focus has shifted to the study of the Ethiopic translation which has not been edited yet.
