The birth of an Ethiopic hagiographic text and its reception: The case of the Gadla Śarṣ́a Ṗeṭros
Abstract: Even though hagiography belongs to the most popular literary works of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tawāḥǝdo Church, almost nothing is known about the creation process of hagiographic texts. The presentation offers unique insights into the complex genesis of the indigenous hagiography of the Ethiopian monk Śarṣ́a Ṗeṭros who lived in the second half of the fifteenth century. He is venerated as a saint in the monastery of Dabra Warq in East Goǧǧām. His hagiography is the result of collective working processes that are documented in distinct manuscripts, and whose physical features are of particular relevance. The analysis of the work’s genesis reveals the prime objective of this hagiography. The presentation closes with a glance on the significant impact on subsequent literary and artistic activities in the community.
