Seminar "(Southeast) Asian-German: What's in a name?"
In Germany, over the past few years, descendants of Southeast Asian migrants have – through blogs, testimonies, novels, art performances, and comic strips – expressed an "Asian-German" identity. This expression reflects the difficulties encountered by this young generation to find a place that is not assigned to them by a dominant discourse, and reflects their will to exert agency.
This seminar examines the ways in which migrants from Southeast Asia and their descendants, the "Southeast Asian-German", formulate a "new" identity. It interrogates the motivation behind the numerous initiatives of (Southeast) Asian-German groups and pounders the differences with other self-denominations or categories.
