Austronesian research seminar "People and spaces: inhabiting land, seas, and cities"
This seminar takes the following question as point of departure: "How do people organize in space, and for which reason do they occupy – or not occupy – certain areas?"
To answer this question, we review cases from the historical records and the contemporary period, and assess persistent patterns, dynamics of change and the factors behind these. Among the cases reviewed, there are villages in mountainous areas, sea nomads and their socio-magical space, but also old as well as new urban settings, and the fast pace of urban development.
