Studying Thai Studies
Thai is the official language of Thailand. It is also the lingua franca in large areas outside the kingdom. By taking language courses, you will be able to understand and express yourself in both standard variants. Lao is offered, in combination with Thai, as a second language (see "Learning Lao or other Tai languages"). Besides, courses in Northern Thai language and script as well as courses in Khmer, an Austro-Asiatic language which has influenced Thai to a large extent, are offered occasionally (see "Learning Khmer").
Seminars for undergraduate and graduate students cover a wide range of topics, with an emphasis on cultural heritage, history and society, literature and philology, and manuscript cultures.
By offering a solid linguistic and cultural training, the program aims to prepare students to understand contemporary developments and issues, as well as to work in or with the countries studied.
For legally binding study regulations, please always refer to the information given by the Studienbüro (Student Services Office).
