In Thai Studies we focus on the teaching of Thai or Standard Thai which is an analytical and tonal language (with five phonemic tones that differentiate meaning), belonging to the Tai-Kadai family. It uses its own intricate script and is primarily spoken in Thailand, serving as an essential lingua franca in Southeast Asia with influences from Khmer, Sanskrit and Pali.
As a major student in the Bachelor program you will follow 6 (six) semesters of Thai, introducing you to the sound system, syntax, word formation and other parts of the grammar. No language courses are offered at the graduate level.
Our Thai language courses are open throughout the university to students of various disciplines. For all courses above our beginner course "Thai I-A", which requires no prior knowledge, participants must of course demonstrate a sufficient mastery of Thai like it is taught in the courses before.
