The two-day conference examines the role of law in Saudi society, both historically and in the present. We adopt a broad perspective that encompasses Islamic norms and state-enacted codes, as well as the ways in which law is understood and applied by institutions, scholars, lawyers, and judges. The conference also explores everyday interactions between individuals and the legal system and the diverse ways in which people experience and engage with the law.
Key questions include: How has the law been shaped by social and historical forces in Saudi Arabia? How is it changing due to recent reform efforts in the kingdom? And how do inequalities arise from differing levels of access to and understanding of legal processes?
The conference is kindly supported by the Körber Stiftung and Fritz Thyssen Stiftung."
