Indonesian language courses
In Austronesian Studies we focus on teaching the Indonesian standard variant of Malay. Compared to other standard variants of Malay that are spoken in Malaysia, Singapore or Brunei, the situation is similar to German as spoken in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
As a major student in the Bachelor program you will follow 6 (six) semesters of Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia), introducing you to the sound system, syntax, word formation and other parts of the grammar. No language course is offered at the graduate level.
Our Indonesian/Malay language courses are open throughout the university to students of various disciplines. For all courses above our beginner course "Indonesian I A", which requires no prior knowledge, participants must of course demonstrate a sufficient mastery of Indonesian/Malay like it is taught in the courses before.
